James Alport Donovan, Jr. papers

1926-1981

The papers consist of correspondence, memoranda, writings, printed matter, photographs, and personal records documenting Donovan's career as a translator and special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (1941-1946), and in various positions in the Department of State (1946-1980). The major portion of the papers relates to his work for the State Department on various cultural exchange programs, particularly with Germany. As head of the project to write the history of the programs, Donovan arranged for oral history interviews with participants. Transcripts are in the papers for Henry B. Ollendorf, David Trask, Jack Pfeiffer, Roberta Greene, and Mack Thompson. Also in the papers are articles by Donovan (1953-1977) and photographs showing him with State Department colleagues (1956-1971).
